We are pleased to announce an insightful webinar designed for emerging professionals within the ISCSBH community, focusing on "Response and Recovery in Shared Built Heritage." While this theme emphasizes disaster response and recovery, it also presents an opportunity to reflect on the broader role of emerging professionals in heritage conservation. The discussion aligns with the themes of the Lumbini Nepal AGA, allowing participants to contribute to the AGA symposium.

- Introduction to the Theme and Purpose
Maria Jose de Freitas, ISCSBH President
Maria José de Freitas is an architect with a PhD in Portuguese Heritage from the University of Coimbra and extensive international experience in heritage renovation projects across Portugal, China, and Macao SAR. She received the ARCASIA Award in 2002 for the musealisation of five heritage houses on Taipa Island, Macau, and previously led the renovation of the D. Pedro V Theatre (1993) and the revitalisation of the Ruins of St. Paul—both later inscribed on the UNESCO Macau Heritage List in 2005. From 2003 to 2005, she served as Coordinator of the Sintra World Heritage Centre, overseeing the Management Plan for the Sintra Cultural Landscape (UNESCO). Since 2021, she has been President of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Shared Built Heritage (ISCSBH), and is an active member of several professional organizations, including ICOMOS, the Asian Academy for Heritage Management, and the Macau Architects Association.

Mohamed W. Fareed, EPs Representative
Mohamed W. Fareed is an architect and researcher with professional and academic experience centered on reinterpreting built heritage in the Middle East. He is an active member of various working groups and scientific committees in ICOMOS. He holds a Master’s degree in world heritage studies from Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg. He also has a postgraduate diploma in urban heritage strategies from the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Helwan University in Egypt. His primary focus in both research and professional practice revolves around the digital reinterpretation of architectural heritage in the Middle East.

- Kerime Danis, ADCOM President
Title: ICOMOS AdCom in Summary: Activities, Triennial Scientific Plan 2024-2027, and 2025 Scientific Symposium: Perception of Heritage & Resilience
Kerime Danis is a Turkish-Australian built heritage specialist with four decades of experience in architecture and heritage conservation. She is the Director of City Plan Heritage, a consultancy based in Sydney. Recently elected as the President of the ICOMOS International Advisory Committee, Kerime has held numerous leadership and expert roles within ICOMOS, including President of Australia ICOMOS (2016),Secretary General of ICIP (2018–2024) and President of ICIP (2024-present), and expert member of multiple international scientific committees such as ISCSBH, ISCES+CC and ISCCL. Her long-standing involvement reflects her deep commitment to sustainability, policy, and the protection of cultural heritage on both national and international levels.
Abstract:
Kerime will provide an overall description of AdCom program and involvement of Assisting Volunteers including Emerging professionals in AdCom activities, the actions of the Triennial Scientific Plan 2024-2027 Taskforce as well as how Emerging Professionals could contribute to these actions including the preparation of the ICOMOS Charter for Emergency Response: Protection of Cultural Heritage in Disasters & Conflicts. The presentation will also provide information on the themes of the ICOMOS 2025 Scientific Symposium to be held between 15 and 18 October in Lumbini, Nepal.
- Mariana Pereira
Title: Emerging Professionals and Heritage in Risk – The Delta as Co-sharer: Rethinking Shared Built Heritage in Reclaimed Estuarine Landscapes
Mariana Pinto Leitão Pereira is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Heritage for Global Challenges Research Centre, University of York (United Kingdom). She was based for her PhD at the Cambridge Heritage Research Centre, University of Cambridge, where she explored how diasporas transiting from colonial-to-postcolonial contexts use cultural heritage to construct and navigate identity. Her publications include co-editing Sustaining Support for Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022), Rethinking the Archaeology-Heritage Divide (2022) and authoring the chapter The Macanese Encontros: Remembrance in Diaspora “Homecomings” (2019). Mariana is a board member of ICOMOS (2023-2026), a board member of ICOMOS Portugal and a member of ISCSBH, SDGWG and ICICH. She also served as of of the Focal Points for the Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG) from 2024 to 2025 Her current research focuses on sea-to-land mobilities and water heritage in delta geographies.
Abstract:
This presentation explores the Pearl River Delta as a co-sharer in shaping built and intangible heritage, focusing on Macao’s waterborne communities. It highlights how ecological changes—like land reclamation and pollution—threaten heritage sustained by fluid, semi-aquatic landscapes. The work calls for a more-than-human approach to shared heritage that acknowledges the ongoing role of disappearing environments in cultural memory.

- Ghofrane Bioud
Title: Toward a Sustainable Future for Shared Built Heritage in Sétif (Algeria): Recognizing, Understanding, and Reusing the 19th and Early 20th Century Architecture
Ghofrane Bioud is a doctoral researcher in architectural and urban heritage at the University of Biskra, Algeria. Her work focuses on colonial-era architecture, heritage preservation, and adaptive reuse. She is actively involved in ICOMOS-ISCSBH and contributes to both academic research and university-level teaching.
Abstract:
This presentation explores the often-overlooked 19th and early 20th-century architectural heritage of Sétif, Algeria. Emphasizing public perception, documentation, and adaptive reuse, the proposal advocates for sustainable conservation strategies in a postcolonial context.
- Vinícius Simedo
Title: Vanishing Landscapes: How Mining Endangers Cultural Heritage
Vinícius Simedo is an undergraduate student in Conservation and Restoration of Built Heritage at the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He has hands-on experience in museum education, cultural tour guiding, and research on historical landscapes, with active participation in ICOMOS-ISCSBH initiatives.
Abstract:
This proposal examines how intensified mining activities, particularly in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, are eroding both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. It highlights the environmental and cultural threats posed by extractive industries, and their impact on community identity, memory, and place.
- Mahmoud A. Balawi & Hamouda Aldohdar
Title: Gaza's Experience in Protecting Palestinian Cultural Heritage During War
Mahmoud A. Balawi is a PhD researcher in conservation legislation and a faculty member at the Islamic University of Gaza. With over two decades of experience, he has authored more than 15 papers and played a key role in shaping Palestinian heritage policy and emergency preservation efforts.
Dr. Hamouda Aldohdar is an architectural conservation specialist with a PhD from Kharkov National University. Based in Gaza, he teaches at the University College of Applied Sciences and is involved in numerous restoration and heritage documentation projects in conflict-affected areas.
Abstract:
This joint presentation outlines emergency heritage protection efforts in Gaza amid ongoing conflict. It details documentation processes, rapid damage assessment, and emergency stabilization of historic structures, proposing a practical and sustainable approach to architectural conservation in war-torn environments.
